TIP - Everything You Need to Know

To ensure compliance with state regulations, everyone who wants to obtain a Louisiana Driver's License, they must take driver education.  Prior to starting your driver's education course, you must first obtain a Class E Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP) from the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). This permit is a prerequisite for participation in the knowledge test, on-road driving skills instruction, and the skills test itself.  The TIP card can be obtained as young as 14 years old, providing an early opportunity to get started on the journey of learning to drive.

The TIP grants driver education students the privilege of operating a motor vehicle under the supervision of a certified instructor during behind-the-wheel instruction or skills testing. It's an essential component for those seeking to gain hands-on experience driving. It's important to note that applicants must fulfill all other identification requirements mandated by the Office of Motor Vehicles. However, exemptions are granted to applicants enrolled in a National Guard Youth Challenge Program or those who commenced driver education, driver training, or pre-licensing training before September 4, 2018.

To obtain a Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP), you'll need to provide proof of identification, proof of residency, and your Social Security Number. Acceptable forms for the Social Security Number include the card, a W2 form, or a printout from the Social Security Administration. Additionally, present one more form of identification, like a student ID or insurance card.

Applicants who are seventeen years old or younger must fulfill additional requirements when applying for a license. The signature of the custodial parent or legal guardian is mandatory for the issuance of any license, whether it's a first-time application, request for duplicates, or changes in restrictions. Furthermore, documentation must be provided to verify custody or legal guardianship. Both the minor and the parent or guardian are required to present identification. In cases of joint custody, only the domiciliary parent is authorized to sign.

Class "E" licenses remain valid until your birthday, approximately six years from the date of issuance. The cost of driver's license fees varies depending on both the age of the applicant and the location of the office. For applicants under 70 years old, the basic license fee is $32.25, whereas those aged 70 and older pay a reduced fee of $18.75. Some field offices may charge an additional fee of $6.00 and accepted forms of payment include cash, credit/debit cards, and personal checks.

Upon completion of driver’s education, the TIP will be surrendered to OMV along with proof of completion of the driver’s education course and any other necessary documents. There is no additional cost to convert your ID from the TIP card to a Learner’s Permit or a Full License.
